ABOUT THE SITE

The general background to the existence of this site is that I was a lecturer in Music Business and Graphics/website design with a parallel music career wishing to centralise and make accessible information from the research and experience of both jobs. The music career has now spanned 25 years and has included many different roles - from guitarist, bassist, vocalist, promoter, label owner, teacher, sound engineer, producer, studio manager, roadie, .......etc, etc (none as glamourous as they might sound!).

What's on the site?

Hopefully I've covered pretty much everything - at least in my experience. There are links to places other than here for those who want to take it further but much of whats on here is quite simple basic advice and information about things you'll come across in the industry - from understanding contracts of all kinds to releasing your own music. The site is constantly being updated so regular visits will be useful. Email me if you want to be on the mailing list for emails about updates, etc.

Who is it for?

The information on here will be useful to bands and DJs hoping to make their next move, students of popular music and music technology, and anyone else perhaps wanting to get involved in some way, from promotion and management to designing record covers. Just try out the links down the left hand side. Good luck.

Teachers

Any teachers or lecturers who may want to use the site to embellish their own teaching are welcome to so long as they tell students about the site for their own private use. I have lots of exercises which go with the material on the site; email me if you need any.

WARNINGS!

  • This site can get very wordy. Be prepared to have to READ.

  • Some of the material here is made up of my raw lecturing resources and would therefore usually be accompanied by me talking through it and answering questions. Large sections have been rewritten for user-friendliness, but not all of it. Any confusion - email me.

  • Some pages will display this symbol;

    This means there is still more info to be added. All the pages, despite the symbol, are still useable. It just means they will get better soon.
    So keep coming back!!
